Show Venue: Whangaparaoa College Theatre, 15 Delshaw St, Whangaparaoa

Saturday 3rd November: Rehearsals at the Theatre – detailed schedule will follow closer to the time

Sunday 4th November: Performances at 11am and 4pm

Our costume coordinators, Kate Koman and Lesley Taylor are already underway busily making costumes. After Easter they plan to hold regular sewing bees on Saturdays. If you can possibly help with simple hand and machine sewing jobs then please do volunteer to come along when you can. It is actually lots of fun and a great way to make new friends. Many hands make light work and you don’t need to be a competent sewer - Kate and Lesley will show you what to do. The students will thank you for helping to bring our show to life. On Monday 26th March I sent out an email with details so please refer to this email if you would like to help.

Lost Property: I have moved the lost property box to the foyer of the Torbay Community Hall to make it easier for you to check. It is starting to overflow again so please do check if you have lost anything.

One Step Beyond News:

Our goal of our youth company, One Step Beyond is to extend our most dedicated and capable students. To be considered for OSB students must attend regular classes at our school in contemporary dance and ballet. Muscle & Bone is highly recommended too as are our stretch/conditioning classes. Once in the company OSB members study contemporary dance, ballet and Muscle and Bone. They have a special 2 hour company session on Saturdays.

This year we have 8 company members: Grace Coffman, Jessie Cole, Rubie Court, Yuxin Dong, Abbey Falconer, Melissa Philpot, Lucy Tee and Ashleigh Williams.

OSB work under the expert guidance of our contemporary tutor Anna MacRae. This term Anna is developing choreography with the whole group and next term they will work in smaller groups with some of the company members being choreographers.

In term 3 OSB will work with a guest professional choreographer and all this material will be performed in their show to be performed at the hall in September. Recently the company attended a wonderful two day workshop led by two of New Zealand’s top choreographers; Sarah Foster and Sarah Knox.

Catching Up With Our Former Students Who Are Currently Studying Dance Full time.

Currently we have 4 former students who are studying dance full time at tertiary level and recently I asked them all about how they are getting on in their programmes.

Emma Lane: 3rd Year Contemporary Dance student at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Dance – London, England

I am currently in my final year at Laban, almost my final term! Training here has been the best decision I ever made. I have met some incredible dancers and worked with some incredible choreographers! I am about to start my final ten weeks here which involves as always taking master classes from choreographers in London and watching any show I can possible see … also handing in my dissertation which I have been working on for weeks now and then working intensely with a choreographer for a commissioned work, our final performance at Laban! I scares me to leave but I am so excited to see what I will be doing next. I have currently been auditioning and am so excited to have received recall auditions for Emergence Dance in the U.K. and Bodhi Dance in Austria! I hope to spend my next year dancing and taking as many classes as I can, either with a company or freelancing to further push myself in the ‘real’ world . Laban has been the best three years of my life and I will be so sad to leave it!

Emma Clavis: 3rd Year Commercial Dance Student at Whitireia, Wellington

The first 3 weeks of my final year studying for the Bachelor Of Applied Arts (Performing Arts) have been an awesome experience so far! I am lucky enough to study in a brand new building on the corner of Cuba Street in Wellington where there are 6 beautiful studios I take class in every weekday. As a returning student I was involved in the opening ceremony for the building performing “The Art of Colour” where Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was attending along with around 600 invited guests.

As a third year student, we are offered more performance opportunities around Wellington which has become a nice preparation for when I graduate at the end of the year and go into the big scary world of professional auditions! Looking back I never knew that beginning classes as a shy 5 year old at Step Beyond Studios would lead me to find such a passion for dancing and allow me to study something I look forward to and love doing every day!  The photo of Emma Clavis at the left by Amber Griffin.

Veronica Devlin: 2nd Year Musical Theatre Student at Whitireia, Wellington

I am currently 3 weeks into my second year at Whitireia. We have moved into the new building on Cuba Street which is incredible. It has really amazing facilities including incredible dance studios, recording studios, a cinema and two theatres. I’m involved in a few productions this year. I’m currently rehearsing Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummers Night Dream’ in the role of Helena, Blood Brothers with Upper Hutt Musical Theatre Company, as well as a few more later on this year. I’m doing lots of dancing this year, including some ballet classes with Emma Clavis in the Commercial Dance Course which is heaps of fun - It’s nice to be dancing with her again.  Overall I’m just getting back into the swing of things and enjoying being back doing what I love!

Alanna Main: 3rd Year Contemporary Dance student at New Zealand School of Dance, Wellington

Alanna is busy preparing for Insight Studio Performances and hasn’t been able to write something just now. But I am in touch with her often and know that last year she travelled to Perth for almost two months to do a secondment with CO3 company. And over the summer she worked with Okareka dance company on their ‘Wired’ show.

Recently Alanna featured on the front cover of Dance Australia magazine – see the pic to the right. Doesn’t she look great! Photo is by Stephen A"Court.

I hope you have found this newsletter interesting and informative. It has certainly been fun writing it. Enjoy the Easter break and we look forward to seeing you back dancing from Tuesday.

Warm regards

Marian and the Step Beyond Studios Team.
